Waterfall rappel, ziplines and lunch

Rocaliza takes a small group from San Juan to Carite State Forest for a river hike, an 80-foot rappel down El Salto waterfall, three ziplines and a home-cooked Puerto Rican lunch. It's the most complete adventure day here, and the hardest.

Waterfall Rappel, Ziplines & Lunch

About this experience

This day happens in Carite State Forest, in the mountains south of San Juan, not in El Yunque, even though some guests call it that in their reviews. A van collects you from 9 a.m. You hike up a spring-water river, wading and climbing small waterfalls, with ropes along the trail to help, until you reach the top of El Salto. Then the guides rig the ropes and you rappel 80 feet (24 m) down the falls.

After the rappel you glide across three ziplines back to base camp. The listing says three; one July reviewer noted the operator's website mentioned five, and only got three. Then comes lunch at a family home in the mountains, home-cooked and included. Guests rave about the grandmother's cooking and the coconut flan, and one tried homemade rum. The listing gives a return time of around 3 p.m., which varies with group size and traffic.

It's physical. Reviewers call the hike intense, with steep hills, mud and moving water. The weight limit is 220 lb, relative to height, and the minimum age is 12. The Viator from-price of $140 is a sale price; the regular rate is $165.

The waterfall repelling and zip lining was so AWESOME! They make you feel very safe and prepared to do all of it. HIGHLY recommend booking with them. Abuelita's cooking for lunch was delicious and they even picked a fresh star fruit for us to try!

He made sure to prioritize safety when it came to zip lining and repelling, I never once felt unsafe. The hike up was nice as well as they have rope lining the trail to assist you heading up. And after all the fun we had a delicious meal at the end with the best coconut flan!

The hike up to the waterfall and the zip lines was a very advanced hike. Please beware, wear appropriate shoes, be prepared to hike through water, mud and up steep hills. [...] I had a great time and would definitely do it again.

Tips before you book

  • Wear fast-dry clothes and closed-toe hiking sandals. Old sneakers or water shoes work too, as the listing suggests.
  • Pack a full change of clothes and a towel for the van back. You will get wet and muddy.
  • Tell the operator about dietary needs when you book. A vegetarian lunch is available.
  • Cruise passengers must give the ship name and boarding times at booking. The listing gives a return time of around 3 p.m.
  • The first uphill is the hardest. A May reviewer said if you make it over that, you're good.
