El Yunque zipline with kids

Children from 7 or 8 can zipline in the El Yunque foothills, depending on the park. The height, weight and price rules differ more than the ages do.

Ziplining is one of the easier adventure days to do with children in Puerto Rico: the courses near El Yunque start low and short, the guides clip everyone on, and families make up a lot of the guest reviews.

The catch is the rules. Each park sets its own minimum age, height and weight, and the child price bands differ too, so check them before you promise anyone a zipline.

The quick answer

Rainforest Zipline Park and JungleQui take children from 8; Rainforest Zipline Park also needs riders to be 4 feet tall. Yunque Ziplining takes riders from 7, and children under 70 lb ride tandem with a guide. Child prices are small discounts: $79 instead of $99 for ages 8 to 15 when booked direct with Rainforest Zipline Park. Under-7s cannot ride at any of the three.

How much do children pay?

Not much less than adults: on the park's own site children 8 to 15 pay $79 against $99, and on Viator the child discount is small.

On Viator, Rainforest Zipline Park's course is from $112 with a small reduction for ages 8 to 15; the pickup version is from $149 and counts 8 to 14 as children. JungleQui's child rate (8 to 12) applies only when sharing with a paying adult. Yunque Ziplining charges the same for everyone. See El Yunque zipline tickets for the full price breakdown.

Can light children get stuck on the line?

One parent reported it: her son got stuck a couple of times, and the staff took great care of him.

One parent at Rainforest Zipline Park wrote that her son got stuck a couple of times because he does not weigh much, and that the staff took great care of him. Yunque Ziplining handles it differently: children under 70 lb ride in tandem with a certified guide.

Is ziplining scary for kids?

Family reviews are positive: the courses start with short, low lines, so children learn the system before the big ones.

At Rainforest Zipline Park three of the eight platforms are low, no more than 4 feet, and five are about 30 feet up. Parents report that their children loved it; one family on a cruise said it was their kids' favorite excursion of the week. At JungleQui, a mother of four children aged 8 to 12 found the lines tall enough for adults but close enough to the ground for young kids.

What do children need to be able to do?

Climb straight-up ladders, walk five to ten minutes uphill on uneven ground, and cope with heat and humidity.

Guests mention several flights of steep steps, and the parks ask for moderate fitness. Pack water and snacks for the car, and dress children like adults: T-shirt, shorts or leggings and closed shoes. See what to wear ziplining for the dress code.

Which park suits which age?

Age 7: Yunque Ziplining. Ages 8 to 12: Rainforest Zipline Park or JungleQui. Teens: JungleQui's rappels, or the waterfall day from 12.

Teenagers who weigh at least 100 lb and are 4 feet tall can also ride the Monster at ToroVerde in Orocovis, about 1.5 hours from San Juan; see the best ziplines in Puerto Rico. For a direct comparison of the two Río Grande parks, read Rainforest Zipline vs JungleQui.

What about younger siblings and non-riders?

Under-7s cannot ride at the three foothill parks, so plan something nearby for them.

JungleQui has a waiting area for non-participants. With little ones in tow, one adult can wait while the others ride, then the family can drive up PR 191 into the national forest (free, 8 AM to 5 PM) or head to Luquillo Beach. The El Yunque small-group waterslide tour does not take children under 6.

What are the best tips for a family zipline day?

Book a morning slot, declare every rider's weight when you book, and arrive 15 to 20 minutes early.

  • Morning is cooler: a 10 AM start at Rainforest Zipline Park, or an early JungleQui tour.
  • Fill in waivers before you arrive where the park sends them (Yunque Ziplining requires it online).
  • Bring a change of clothes and a refillable bottle.
  • Tell the guides if a child is nervous: they start everyone on the low lines.
  • Every zipline here cancels free up to 24 hours before.

Planning the family day? The eight-line course runs at 10 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM.
