El Yunque waterslides and a rope swing

A small group meets in Fajardo, drives on to a river on El Yunque's slopes, and spends three hours hiking, sliding down natural rock waterslides and swinging into pools. There's no zipline: it's the cheap, wet alternative, and you need your own car.

El Yunque Waterslide & Rope Swing Half Day

About this experience

This is a river tour, not a zipline. You meet the guide at Naranjo Park in Fajardo at 2 p.m., then drive your own car on to the El Yunque hiking area. The next three hours are a hike over rock and mud to a river where the water has carved natural waterslides, with a rope swing, and one guest names cliff jumping as a highlight. Life jackets and helmets are mandatory.

The rules are strict, and the operator enforces them. Riders must be 10 to 60, in excellent shape and able to walk steep, rocky, muddy ground without help, and you have to show proof of age. Overweight guests, pregnant guests and anyone with injuries or health problems are turned away without a refund. On Saturdays the group starts from a different point and the hike is longer and harder.

The big catch is transport. You need your own owned or rented car: Uber, Lyft and taxis are not allowed for this tour, and drivers don't go to the trailhead. If you have no car, the small-group tour from Condado runs a similar river day with a van. At $49 it is cheap for a guided half day (the Condado van tour is $44), with a 5.0 rating from 84 reviews.

  • Natural rock waterslides and a rope swing in an El Yunque river
  • Cliff jumping for the brave (a guest highlight), calm water for the rest
  • Life jacket and helmet required
  • From $49 for a guided half day
  • Small groups with a local guide

What guests say

★★★★★

This was such a great time! It was challenging enough for those who wanted that, but provided a relaxed opportunity in the water for those less brave. Our tour guide was nice and funny! Kids aged 16-21 as well as parents had a great time.

The hike was a bit challenging but totally worth it for the natural waterslide and cliff jumping, which were highlights. Pro tip: bring tennis shoes you don't mind getting wet or ruined, as the trails can get muddy.

Tips before you book

  • Bring ID for every guest. The operator checks ages and won't refund anyone outside 10 to 60.
  • Read the belongings policy on the listing before you go. Bring as little as you can: you're in the water.
  • Book a weekday if you want the shorter hike. Saturdays start from a different, harder point.
  • Plan your drive to Fajardo with at least an hour to spare, as the listing asks.
