El Yunque entry rules in 2026

El Yunque is free to enter this year and you don't need a reservation. That may change: the Forest Service has filed a plan to charge for La Mina and El Portal. Here is what applies now and what is coming.

A few years ago you needed a $2 timed ticket from Recreation.gov to drive into El Yunque. That system is gone. In 2026 the PR 191 corridor in Río Grande is free and open to anyone who finds a parking space.

This post sets out the rules for this autumn, the fee plan published in September, and how the forest fits around a zipline slot further down the same road.

The quick answer

Entry to the PR 191 corridor is free, with no reservation, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; be back at your car by 4:45. El Portal, the visitor center, charges $8 for visitors over 16, according to an August 2026 hiking guide. A proposal to charge $4 a day at La Mina and sell passes at El Portal was published on 8 September 2026 and could not start before March 2027. A zipline ticket is separate: the parks are on private land.

Do you need a reservation for El Yunque in 2026?

No. The PR 191 North corridor in Río Grande is free and needs no reservation or ticket.

The Forest Service conditions page says entry to the recreational corridor is free and no reservations are required. The old $2 vehicle ticket on Recreation.gov is no longer needed.

Free doesn't mean unlimited. The same page says visitor numbers are managed because of limited parking and the construction work in the forest. On weekends and holidays, expect to wait for a space if the lots are full.

What are El Yunque's opening hours and parking rules?

8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the Forest Service asking visitors to start leaving at least 15 minutes before closing. Park only in marked areas and arrive early on busy days.

A hiking guide updated in August 2026 recommends getting to the gate around 7:45 a.m., parking only in marked areas, and planning around limited rideshare: La Coca gate and El Portal are not authorized rideshare pickup or drop-off points. A JungleQui guest noted there was "no phone signal" at the park, only wifi to call an Uber.

Is El Yunque going to charge an entrance fee?

Possibly from 2027. A Forest Service notice from 8 September 2026 proposes $4 a day at La Mina and multi-day passes at El Portal, but nothing is approved yet.

The Federal Register notice proposes a special recreation permit for the La Mina Recreation Area and a standard amenity fee for El Portal. If approved, the fees would start no earlier than six months after the notice, so not before March 2027, and a citizens' advisory committee reviews them before a final decision. At least 80% of the money would be spent where it is collected.

The plan has drawn objection. Metro Puerto Rico reported that Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández objected to charging for something that is free today. Watch this space before a spring 2027 trip.

How much does El Portal cost to visit?

An August 2026 hiking guide gives $8 per person over 16. The Forest Service El Portal page lists 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and children 15 and under free.

El Portal is the rainforest center at the forest entrance. The Forest Service page says it is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Three Kings Day (6 January). Check the current fee and hours on the official El Portal page before you go.

Is a zipline ticket the same as El Yunque entry?

No. The zipline parks are private businesses on land below the forest. Your ticket pays for the course, not for El Yunque.

The Rainforest Zipline course costs from $112 on Viator, or $99 for adults and $79 for children 8 to 15 if you book with the park directly. JungleQui is $145 and Yunque Ziplining in Luquillo $149. None of them includes forest entry, and none needs it, since the corridor is free.

A guided forest day is different. The small-group tour from San Juan ($44) drives you in from Condado, so you need neither a car nor a parking space on a capacity-managed weekend.

How do you fit El Yunque around a zipline slot?

Ride Rainforest Zipline at 10 a.m. and reach the corridor by lunch, or visit the forest at 8 a.m. and take the 1 p.m. ride.

The Rainforest Zipline course takes 1.5 to 2 hours, with tours at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Add 15 to 20 minutes for check-in. Both halves of the day sit on PR 191, so you lose very little time driving. The 3 p.m. slot doesn't pair well: by the time you finish, the corridor is closing.
